Invitation to donate to Democracy Project of Transylvania, Inc. 

In the fall of 2017, the DPT implemented a pilot project in the middle schools in Transylvania County. This non-partisan project continues to create opportunities for members of our local community to tell their stories to middle school students with an emphasis on how those experiences have influenced their civic life. We are grateful to all our sponsors and enthusiastic supporters. 

As many of our supporters know, over 200 students participated in the speaker phase of our program in the early months of 2020. Then came the school closures due to the pandemic. Fortunately, a significant number of students were able to continue with their projects from home, and, with the teachers’ help, submitted them online to our judges. The judging was carried out in that way as well and awards were mailed to the students and the teacher teams in May. 

The public school system has given us permission to offer this program to their middle schools. We worked with a videographer to record the introductory material and speaker presentations. 

Again this year, students will create projects in response to the theme. The projects will be judged online. An awards celebration will be held in May. Our goal, as always, is to encourage members of our community of all ages to listen and speak with respect and to renew their enthusiasm for our representative democracy. We invite you to share in this vision for strengthening a sense of civic connection and informed awareness among our young people as well as a multi-generational connection between our students and the broader community. They are our future and the future of our life together. We believe that this initiative is a model with the potential to make a lasting impact on our county, our state, and our country.

We will again be offering cash awards to the winning students as well as a cash award for each school to enhance their civic education curriculum.
